{"id":2401,"date":"2019-11-18T12:39:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T12:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gaconnector.com\/docs\/?p=2401"},"modified":"2020-05-21T06:44:38","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T06:44:38","slug":"troubleshoot-incorrect-traffic-source-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gaconnector.com\/docs\/troubleshoot-incorrect-traffic-source-information\/","title":{"rendered":"How to troubleshoot incorrect traffic source information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This guide applies to situations when GA Connector fields are\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong> empty in your CRM, however, you have a reason to believe that the values in these fields aren&#8217;t correct.<\/p>\n<p>Below you can find the instructions on how to troubleshoot this, depending on which traffic source isn&#8217;t tracked correctly:<\/p>\n<h3>Organic Traffic<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re seeing (not provided) instead of organic keywords, this is unfortunately normal. Google made sure it&#8217;s technically impossible to track those keywords in relation to individual users. You can find more information on the topic in this\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/gaconnector.com\/docs\/why-do-i-see-not-set-not-provided-and-none-in-some-ga-connector-fields\/\">article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Paid Traffic<\/h3>\n<p>In most cases, paid traffic (Google\/Facebook\/Bing\/&#8230; Ads) arent&#8217; tracked correctly when UTM parameters aren&#8217;t set.\u00a0Here are the UTM tracking instructions\u00a0for most common PPC services:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gaconnector.com\/docs\/tag-adword-links\/\">Google Ads<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gaconnector.com\/docs\/ufaqs\/how-do-i-configure-ga-connector-to-track-facebook-traffic\/\">Facebook Ads<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Referral Traffic<\/h3>\n<p>First off, here is how a lead coming from Referral channel is supposed to be tracked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Channel<\/strong>: &#8220;Referral&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Source<\/strong>: domain of the referring link<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medium<\/strong>: &#8220;referral&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Campaign<\/strong>: &#8220;(referral)&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Content<\/strong>: referrer URL<\/li>\n<li><strong>Term<\/strong>: &#8220;(not set)&#8221; &#8212; this field doesn&#8217;t apply to Referral channel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If Referral traffic is\u00a0not tracked like shown above, check out this troubleshooting checklist:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure\u00a0your website has an SSL certificate installed and uses HTTPS protocol.\u00a0Browsers hide referral information when the user is coming from a secure to non-secure website.<\/li>\n<li>Also, make sure your referral traffic goes straight to the HTTPS version of your website, without a redirect from HTTP. Such redirects force browsers to hide referral information from tracking scripts like GA Connector.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that your referrer links don&#8217;t have a rel=\u201cnoreferrer\u201d attribute. This attribute forces browsers to hide referrer information.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that GA Connector script is only pasted once, and exactly as shown in instruction. Misplacing GA Connector script may cause bugs, especially with tracking referrers.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you haven&#8217;t updated your website&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/HTTP\/Headers\/Referrer-Policy\">referrer-policy<\/a>. In order to make sure that referrer tracking works correctly, referrer-policy must be set to default &#8220;no-referrer-when-downgrade&#8221;.
